Technique of the month April
(Pre-Spawn)
Getting skunked stinks, and I am going to share my most confident technique that I have learned in the last month. Most of us are quite familiar with fishing wacky style with a senko-type worm. I made some modifications that I found it very effective, that is, to transition to a light Ned EWG lure; the size that was the most effective was 2/0 on a 3/16th weight. The worm that worked extremely well was Zoom's Trick Worm Green Pumpkin with Chartreuse. I would work it like a regular shake, like you would with a shaky, but let it hit the lake floor and then slow reel (one turn), shake, slow reel (one turn), and repeat. Good luck!

This past month (April), I participated in three tournaments, one of which is still ongoing since it's an online tournament. The key lessons learned were locations and slowing down. I beat one area way too long, and power fished way too much! Remember time management when competing, hit your first fishing spot, and if the three top patterns, baits/lures that you have established, do not work, move on. Have at least 5 areas that you can work on to give you flexibility if taken by other competitors. Also, use the one-third rule when competing, meaning you should give yourself at least two days of planning and practicing for one-day tournaments. Lastly, remember to have a balance between power fishing and finesse. Sometimes what works is just finesse fishing; if that is what is working, then stick with it!
