When to change it up
On May 9th-10th, I participated in my first Kayak Bass Fishing team event for the season. I practiced alone and was able to locate a few spawning locations with visible beds. During practice I went soft on the fish and just landed a couple, even though I seen a lot more that I could have pursued. For the large mouth I used the most current Tactic which was throwing a Ned in the bed and in or around it, but no luck. So, I went back to interrogations by throwing bladed baits followed by a finesse type (drop shot/jig). This, however, did work and landed one on a drop shot, with a Yamamoto Baby bass shad (nose hooked). VMC hook 1/0. I marked more Largies in the area, but didn’t try to hook any more. In another different part of the lake, I noticed more rock, which was a complete change in scenario less grass and more small circular rocks and noticed one of my favorite nautical terrain features, which is long shallow flats, I figured this location had the possibility of having Smallies and I was correct, in that area I noticed the same rock bed formations from a different lake and went directly to the Ned EWG Green pumpkin (Texas style) it paid off within a short time frame (15 inch Smallie). I also, ran into a Soldier who was out fishing as well and so having company and catching fish is always nice. The water was extremely clear with visibility up to 15ft, sunny, with water temperature in the high fifties. As for the tournament, everything went completely south, none of the pre-planning fell into place as I had anticipated. After about an hour and half of harassing the Largies currently visible on beds, my fishing partner and I couldn't get a reaction bite at all. Perhaps, they were spooked by all the pressure, or I messed up by catching one of them. We decided to leave the area and locate more to harass, which ended up being a waste of time. So, I changed up tactics and decided to throw blades around the surrounding beds, this however did pay off and I landed the small largemouth in the photo, but it was day late and dollar short as we ran out of time. So, in reflection, I should have camped longer, divided my time between the two promised locations and then went blading at the mid-point of the tournament instead of bed searching for the majority of the day.
